This is simply to inform newcomers where they may discover and download free Big Data Virtual Machines (VM) for personal use or practice. The virtual machines listed below aren’t limited to big-data platforms; they can also be used to study data platform technologies.
1. Oracle Big Data Lite Virtual Machine
Version 4.11 can be downloaded from here.
Oracle is providing this appliance for evaluation and educational purposes only; it is unsupported and not to be used in production. It includes software products that are optional on the Oracle Big Data Appliance (BDA), including Oracle NoSQL Database Enterprise Edition, Oracle Big Data Spatial and Graph and Oracle Big Data Connectors.
2. Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP®) on Hortonworks Sandbox
The HDP Sandbox makes it easy to get started with Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark, Apache Hive, Apache HBase, Druid and Data Analytics Studio (DAS). Click here to download.
3. Cloudera DataFlow (Ambari) on Sandbox
Cloudera DataFlow (Ambari)—formerly Hortonworks DataFlow (HDF)—on Sandbox makes it easy to get started with Apache NiFi, Apache Kafka, Apache Storm, and Streaming Analytics Manager (SAM). Click here to download.
4. CDP Private Cloud
You must sign-up to download it. A trail version is available to download. Click here.

5. Cloudera QuickStart VM (Legacy Versions)
The last free version is 5.12 which can be downloaded from here for virtual box and from here for VMware. This has Hadoop, Apache Hive, Apache Impala, Sqoop, Flume, Hue, Solr, Spark, HBase, etc. Please note that these are all for learning purposes, not for production.
6. Hadoop Packaged By Bitnami
Bitnami Virtual Machines contain a minimal Linux operating system with Hadoop installed and configured. Using the Bitnami Virtual Machine image requires hypervisor software such as VMware Player or VirtualBox. Both of these hypervisors are available free of charge.
